Quack Devices

For roughly a century — from the 1880s through the Second World War — American and European households were sold electricity, radioactivity, colored light and mechanical vibration as cures for almost everything. These were not folk remedies but manufactured goods: nickel-plated coils, glowing vacuum electrodes, dial-covered "radionics" boxes and belts wired with zinc and copper, each sold with a pseudo-scientific story and, often, a patent. This wing studies those objects as artifacts of engineering and commerce — how they were built, who built them, what they actually did (usually little, and sometimes real harm), and how regulators, the American Medical Association's Propaganda Department, and the Food and Drug Administration eventually shut most of them down. The devices are genuine antiques worth understanding; the medical claims attached to them were false. Nothing here is medical advice — it is the history of how a device could look like science and be sold as medicine.
